Final Blog Post

Technology plays a big role in my life and I would say that I have a pretty close relationship with it. Whether that relationship is toxic or good for me, I'm not sure. I tend to spend some time scrolling through different social media platforms when I'm bored which can turn into endless hours of scrolling and scrolling. Technology is there for me when I'm bored or when I don't feel like thinking. I know I can always log into my favorite app and be distracted for a while.  Instagram Account My online presence is also something that I think about a lot. As of right now my presence online isn't anything special. I would say that I have an average amount of followers and engagement throughout all of my social media platforms. I have grown up using social media with Twitter being the first social media account I ever made. Social media has changed a lot over the years and me with it. I used to care about how many likes my Instagram posts got or how many re-tweets I had

What I Learned EOTO

Image
One of the presentations that stood out to me the most was online influencers. Online influencers are a huge part of our society and I feel like they are not talked about enough. The presentation talked about how these online influencers sometimes have a negative effect on young women. This really resonated with me because sometimes it is hard to look at an influencers social media page and compare it to your own. Their whole careers are social media and it is there job to make their lives look as perfect as possible. Social media influencers do almost nothing but somehow still make so much money and have such a hold on us as a society. An influencer could post a video of them lip singing to a song and they could be getting paid upwards of $1,000 just for that one post.  Influencers It makes it hard on regular people to see these influencers doing almost nothing yet getting rewarded for it. The influencer market is only continuing to grow. Tik Tok has led to a huge surge in more onlin

Diffusion of Innovations

Image
The innovation that I chose to look at through the lens of the diffusion theory is Netflix. Netflix was one of the first streaming websites and has been the basis for which all streaming sites have copied from. Netflix originally allowed its customers to rent DVD's online and receive them by mail. They later moved fully online and began their online streaming services in 2007. Many people became early adopters of Netflix because they were changing with the times. Netflix single handily put Blockbuster out of business and therefore ended the DVD rental business. As technology started to change so did Netflix. The company was able to keep up with new technological advances and that is why so many people bought into it. The early majority came when Netflix started to release its own original programming, starting with House of Cards. This drew people in and made them want to be apart of what was happening. The late majority came when people realized that DVD's were done for good

EOTO #2

News Desert  The poli cy that I chose to research was news deserts. A news desert is a community, either rural or urban, with limited access to credible and comprehensive news and information that feeds democracy at the grassroots level. News deserts have been popping up across the country since the early 2000' s. The t otal number of newspapers in the U.S. went from 8,891 in 2004 to 7,112 in 2018. The numbers have risen significantly since th en. The pandemic and the ensuing recession have greatly accelerated the loss of local news that has been occurring over the past two decades. The issue is not that people don't want to try and save t hese newspapers, it is that there is a serious lack of capitol and funding available to support them. A wide variety of for-profit, nonprofit and publicly funded news organizations have attempted to counter the rise of news deserts but have been unsuccessful. As a result of the pandemic and the changing technology many newspapers have switc

EOTO Technology

Instagram Article  After watching all of the presentations the one that stood out to me the most was Instagram. Instagram is a photo and video sharing app created in 2010 that has taken the world by storm. It is now owned by Facebook and has become one of the main media platforms used today. Instagram birthed an era of influencers, hashtags, social media marketing and even mental health issues. The idea of Instagram was to be a place where you could connect with family and friends and share your photos and videos with them. Since then it has evolved into a much more prominent and powerful platform. Some people rely on Instagram as their main source of income and use the platform to collaborate with brands and market their products. These people are called influencers. Instagram has also been the cause of lots of mental heath issues. People tend to portray their best selves on the app therefore giving a false idea of what their lives are actually like. Instagram can also be linked to so

Antiwar Voices

Image
Almost all of the mainstream media and news that you hear comes from the same few big companies. These companies are so powerful and have such a strong hold on the American people that whatever they say is true and that is it. Lots of these companies are also linked to very powerful people. These powerful people, whether it be in government or private business all have an agenda to push. The news tries to suppress strong voices and opinions that do not go along with the narrative that they want to push onto the American people. This is why you tend to not hear of any antiwar voices in the mainstream news. Simply because what they are saying does not fit the narrative that these big companies are trying to push.  If a mainstream news outlet started to push antiwar voices and opinions the network would most likely fire them or give them a slap on the wrist. The networks and the people behind the desk do not want such things being said on their air. It is most likely because they have so

EOTO Com Tech Timeline

Image
The piece of technology that I chose for my EOTO was Netflix. I chose Netflix because it is something that I, along with many other people use every day. Netflix is not something that has been around a very long time yet it has such a great hold on us as a society.  Netflix     Netflix was founded in in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph. When Netflix first started the main purpose of the company was to rent out DVD's to people by mail. At the time Blockbuster was the main source of all DVD rentals. Netflix put a spin on Blockbusters approach to renting DVD's and sent them out by mail instead of having to go into the store to find one. This greatly benefitted people who lived in more rural areas and did not have access to a Blockbuster near them. As Netflix started to grow Blockbuster started to die. By 2010 Blockbuster had filed for bankruptcy and closed almost all of their locations. As of 2020 only one Blockbuster remains. Blockbusters decline is directly related to Ne

Eight Values of Free Expression Blog

Image
There are eight values of free expression. The first value is marketplace of ideas, which is about truth and falsehood, and that the truth will always win. The second value is participation in self government, which highlights the importance of  an informed electorate involved in debate. The third is stable change, which argues that people will feel more  stable  in a society where they can  speak  their mind  and  "vent" about their opinions. The fourth value is individual  self-fulfillment, which states that freedom of speech becomes an aspect of ones human dignity. The fifth is check on governmental power, which enables people to learn the truth about candidates and do with that information what they please. The sixth value is to promote tolerance, which basically means that in some cases hate speech is good because people can learn from it and therefore learn to tolerate more things in a society. The seventh is to promote innovation and to promote freedom of speech and i

Supreme Court Blog

Image
After reading the article about the Supreme Court a few things stood out to me. I did not know that the court started out with only six justices. It makes sense that it was later changed to nine, in order for there never to be a tie vote. I also did not know that the Supreme Court chief Justice is the one who presides over trials of impeachment over the President of the United States. This just proves that the system of checks and balances put in place works because it is a perfect example of one branch of government keeping the other in line. The Supreme Court is known as the highest court in the land and their decisions on cases is final. Thousands of cases get brought to the Supreme Court a year and they have to carefully choose the ones that they will take. The ones that they do take on usually have to deal with issues that effect not only those involved in the case but that will have an effect on many Americans. Many Supreme Court cases gain lots of public attention and people te
