EOTO Com Tech Timeline

The piece of technology that I chose for my EOTO was Netflix. I chose Netflix because it is something that I, along with many other people use every day. Netflix is not something that has been around a very long time yet it has such a great hold on us as a society.

Netflix

Netflix was founded in in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph. When Netflix first started the main purpose of the company was to rent out DVD's to people by mail. At the time Blockbuster was the main source of all DVD rentals. Netflix put a spin on Blockbusters approach to renting DVD's and sent them out by mail instead of having to go into the store to find one. This greatly benefitted people who lived in more rural areas and did not have access to a Blockbuster near them. As Netflix started to grow Blockbuster started to die. By 2010 Blockbuster had filed for bankruptcy and closed almost all of their locations. As of 2020 only one Blockbuster remains. Blockbusters decline is directly related to Netflix. As the world moved on to a more tech savvy way of life so did Netflix. By 2007 Netflix had taken to an online platform and began streaming media and videos on demand. No longer did you have to wait on snail mail to get your rented DVD, but instead you could go online and with a click of a button you could be watching whatever you wanted.

Netflix History

Since then Netflix has proven itself to be one of the biggest streaming platforms out there. Netflix offers a wide variety of content ranging from TV series, documentaries, feature films and original productions. It is available for streaming in over 190 countries and is offered in more than 27 languages. Netflix has also gained a lot of traction with their original productions, some of which have gone on to be award winning television series. Needless to say Netflix has done well for itself over the years, this is due largely to the fact that they are able to keep up with the ever changing technology. Netflix was the first major streaming service to exist and it started many phenomenons such as "binge watching" and "Netflix and chill".

Netflix Tests a Clampdown on Password Sharing - The New York Times

Netflix has changed the way cable providers and other streaming services do their business. Netflix takes user data and is able to provide you with suggested shows or movies to watch. In a way Netflix takes the hard decision of deciding what to watch out the equation. You can simply log into Netflix and immediately it will tell you things that it thinks you should watch based on your watch history. This makes Netflix feel more personal and it is what keeps people coming back to it. Netflix has grown so big that even if you do not own a Netflix account, chances are that your new television remote will come with a button for it. Netflix has since recently found its way onto the remotes of almost all smart TV's. So even if you are not a fan of Netflix or do not have an account, chances are it is still showing up in your life somewhere.
