Bringing Books to Life

You know how people will always say "the book was better than the movie"? Well, most of the time they are right. Writers and producers alike can never seem to get it right when it comes to book to film adaptations. This is why I have decided to make it my lifelong goal to successfully and accurately adapt a book into a major motion picture or television series. Reading and film have always been two of my lifelong passions, so what better way to combine the two than by taking on this endeavor.

My love for reading was sparked by the surge of dystopian novels that dominated the book market back in the early 2010's. These books included The Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner and other books of that sort. All of which were adapted into major motion pictures. Some were adapted successfully while others did the books no justice. Film producers tend to stray from the original plot and story line of the books which ends up resulting in an entirely new story. The key to a good adaptation is to stay as true to the original story as possible. For example The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien is an amazing book with a great story line, in depth characters and is loved by many. The films however decided to add their own twist to the already amazing story and ended up ruining it. It would be my goal to work as closely as possible with authors to get an accurate idea of what they want out of the adaptation. Authors do an amazing job of creating characters that stay with us long after we have closed the book and it is a dream of mine to continue on those characters legacies and bring them to life for all to see.

Literature Vs. Adaptation: The Hobbit, 'Monumental Disappointment and Invincible Dwarves'

Due to the app TikTok, a new community and era of books and book lovers has emerged and it is called 'BookTok'. Just like how dystopian novels dominated the 2010's, fantasy has been dominating the 2020's. A new wave of authors have made their mark on the book community and they are not going anywhere anytime soon. Some of these major book series include A Court of Thorns and Roses, From Blood and Ash, and Throne of Glass. These are just a few of the many fantasy series that have taken BookTok by storm. They have become so popular that now Barnes and Noble have set up 'BookTok Tables' in their stores to advertise all of the popular books that circulate the app. One of the most popular series, A Court of Thorns and Roses has already signed a deal with Hulu to have the series adapted into a television series. This is big news for Hulu because they have not really delved into the world of fantasy and they are hoping for this series to be their 'token' fantasy series that will really put them on the map, just like Game of Thrones did for HBO. It is my hope along with everyone else's in the book community that Hulu knows what they are doing and will stay true to the books.

While there is not much I can do right now while still in college it remains my dream and lifelong passion to one day take one of these beloved book series and truly make something amazing out of them that not just the reader will be proud of but also the author.
